WHO has estimated that the current level of syringe reuse in medical settings is directly responsible for deaths of 1.3 million children and adults every year. Auto-disable one-time-use syringes are available but only for about 10% of all injection. Multi-dose vials are used in low and middle income countries instead of pre-filled single dose syringes. In addition to direct infection due to dirty used needles, multi dose vials contaminated by dirty needles become a source of infection. The current global COVID-19 vaccine campaign calls for 12-1 billion new injections. Based upon current estimated needle-re-use rates, this will result in 2-3 million additional deaths due to needle-transmitted hepatitis B and C and HIV. New technologies are needed to eliminate syringe re-use and to eliminate multi dose vials.
Thanks for starting this discussion, @mfree! I’m moving it into the challenges phase of our Global Visioneering program. That is our active program for the next of the next XPRIZE competition(s).
